From Gemstone to Gem

※ The process of processing colored gems below is introduced in a life-size model divided into five zones of “Dynamics Hall” in the Permanent Exhibition Hall.

  • 01Assessing & Designing The gemstone minerals that are in shape are called ore, and the work of separating mineral and jewel from the extracted ore is called assessing. Selecting only high quality gemstones for the purpose of cutting among the assessed ore is called designing.

  • 02Slabbing, Marking The cutting of selected gemstones into the form of plates during processing is called slabbing. The desired processing shapes are drawn on the cut gemstone with an aluminum rod or a marking pen.

  • 03Trimming The outer part of the gemstone with the shape drawn on it is roughly cut off, which is called trimming and it saves polishing time.

  • 04Polishing Gemstones are attached to a stick called a top stick and its surface is smoothened using an abrasive board. For polishing, varnish is used with wool or leather-coated abrasive plate.
  • 완성
  • 05Completion The processed jewel is evaluated and databased and set on accessories such as rings, necklaces, etc. to produce the finished product.
